Chapter Fourteen

Trinity was a little reluctant to return to Pelican’s Heath as it would mean the guys getting back into their routine and she wouldn’t see them as much. It had been lovely having their company these past couple of days, and she’d miss them. But she had to admit there was nothing keeping her here any longer, so it was only fair to let them go back to work.

“I expect you’ll have loads to do now that you’ve got all this stuff to load up,” Jarrod remarked as he picked up the large envelope with her hard drive and everything else they had retrieved from her safe.

She smiled, wondering if he’d read her mind. “Yeah. It’ll give me something to do,” she said with a shrug.

“Are you afraid you’ll get bored being at Pelican’s Heath?”

She was amazed at how concerned Jarrod appeared as he asked her. She shook her head. “No, there’s plenty to do there.”

“That’s good.” Jarrod sighed as they left the diner.

Cordell drove them back to the hotel where they went to pack their bags.

“I’ll be a few minutes,” Trinity told them when they arrived upstairs.

They placed her bags inside the door, and she caught Cordell gazing wistfully at her bed moments before they left.

She delved into one of the bags and pulled out a striking yellow T-shirt to go with her new bright green jeans. With a smile, she quickly changed. She checked herself in the mirror and was happy with what she saw. She looked much more like her old self. There was only one more thing. In the bathroom, she found her makeup bag and pulled out the bright pink lipstick that had lain unused at the bottom for several weeks. It didn’t take long to apply some eyeliner, sparkly eye shadow and thick mascara. She giggled at her dramatic reflection. Somehow, she felt whole again. Normal.

She quickly packed all her things and swung open her door just as they were about to knock.

Jarrod gaped at her. Cordell’s face split into the most dazzling smile.

“Ready?” she asked.

“For anything, darlin’,” Jarrod assured her, still appearing utterly astonished.

“Wow! You are stunning, sweetheart.” Cordell nodded.

“Beautiful!” Jarrod agreed.

“Thanks.”

“Let’s go home,” Cordell offered.

They headed downstairs, laughing. Trinity was overjoyed with their reactions. They had never seen her like this and she wasn’t quite sure what the cowboys would make of her appearance. They seemed to love it, though, if their whoops and hollers as they went out to the SUV were anything to go by.

“I’m driving,” Cordell announced once they’d piled everything into the trunk. “Wanna ride up front?” He flashed that smile at her and she couldn’t refuse.

Soon they were on their way, and Trinity was surprised at how relieved she felt as the factories of the town gave way to lush fields and distant mountains.

“You don’t look too much like a country girl right now,” Jarrod remarked as they admired the landscape.

She turned to face him. He was grinning at her, his face radiant and open.

“Is that a problem, cowboy?” She raised an eyebrow.
